There are so many reasons why you should consider starting an online business. Starting an online business gives you the freedom to work from anywhere. It is cheaper than the traditional brick and mortar business and allows to work with people across the globe.
However, not everything is all rosy. When I started my first online business I took forever perfecting my website and thought people would just somehow stumble upon it on Google or Bing but that was not the case.
They say experience is the best teacher but when it comes to some things, it’s better to learn from those who have been there before.
In this post I share with you what some amazing online business owners wish they knew or did before starting their online business. Most tips and advice apply to any business.
What you do wish you knew before starting your Online Business?
How much patience an online business needs. It’s not a get rich quick scheme, you need to put in the work! I wish I knew how much time it took for things to be set up, for example content, email marketing content and the long hours I needed to put in for getting clients (social media marketing). You need to be okay with failing and learning from those failures. It’s okay if you don’t succeed at your very first try. Take a look at your actions, reassess, and come up with a new plan to succeed. There will be times when you will be discouraged and want to give it up, PUSH THROUGH IT! What is the problem that your product or service will solve? This is the master question all entrepreneurs should ask themselves before moving forward. This is how your product or service will be different from your competitors.
Look at what your competitors are doing. Take a look at their website, social media platforms, content and prices. With this information, you can do a SWOT (Strengths,Weaknesses,Opportunities and Threats) analysis.
Come up with your target audience. Create an avatar, a persona. Imagine your ideal client as a real person. Who are they, where do they live, what do they like etc.

For your business to run, you need to be online all the time. Invest in your internet because your business depends on it. Be active on social media. You need to be very creative and innovative. Remember that people go online for various reasons and in most cases for fun and research. You need to get creative to capture their attention. You need to understand that you don’t have to talk about your business all the time. Talk about things that will engage your followers and aspiring customers. Remember not everyone is your customer. I didn’t know anything about Search Engine Optimization (SEO), keywords or Domain Authority. I thought my website would somehow just pop up on search engines which wasn’t case (obviously).That being said, social media for businesses is not an option. Your business has to be on social media.
