5 Steps to start an online store
Business name registration.
Come up with a name for your business and check if the domain (www.yourbusinessname.com) is available. Before you register the domain name, go and have your business registered with PACRA (Zambia) to make sure the name is not taken.
Register your domain name.
My go-to for domain registration is Namecheap because it's affordable and most importantly they have good customer support.
Pick an online store builder.
There are a lot of online store builders to pick from. Some of which are, Bigcommerce, Volusion, Shopify, Squarespace, and Wordpress plus Woocommerce (plugin). I'm biased towards Shopify because
It is user-friendly
Has a lot of beautiful themes to pick from that are easy to customize
It's an out of the box kind of platform
You don't have to worry about plugins or website maintenance
It is secure
Design your online store
Pick a theme that looks like what you would want your online store to look like and customize it. Add a logo, brand colours, and products to your store. You can make a free logo using Canva.
Choose a payment gateway
You need to be able to receive payments online. Paypal is the most popular payment gateway. It is easy to set up. All you need to do is to sign up with Paypal and select Paypal in Shopify payments set up.
I take it this is day 5 and you are done. Now the hard work begins. Driving traffic to your site doesn't happen overnight. This where social media, email marketing and search engine optimization (SEO) come in. Now, don't stress yourself. Rome was not built in a day.Set weekly and monthly goals.
